How to repair a fence post

Over time some fence posts, particularly older ones may need replacing or even repairing. Whether from general wear and tear, or water or wind damage, it’s vital to know how to spot the signs and what to do should a fence post need repairing.

There can be multiple reasons why your fence post may need repairing. As fence posts provide support for fencing, a loss in stability is likely to indicate damage to the post.

Damaged or broken fence posts can be hazardous, particularly when subject to strong winds. This means that repairing your post as quickly and effectively as possible is highly recommended to prevent further damage to the rest of the fence or other possible objects located nearby.

How do I repair a fence post?

Repairing a fence post can often be a lengthy process and, depending on how much post mix was used during installation, it can take hours. However, if you are prepared to do it yourself, be advised and follow these steps:

1. Start at where your fence post is visible and simply dig 2ft down straight along the back of your broken fence post.
2. Drop a concrete spur into the hole and prop it up against the fence post. Then drill and secure your concrete spur to the broken post.
3. Pour post mix and water into the hole and wait for the post mix to set.
