Used normally either to mark a boundary or restrict the movement of animal stock and bought for its strength, stake and rail fencing provides a low-cost fence ideal when you do not wish to restrict the view of your surroundings.
Round and half-round post and rail options
Cheltenham Fencing and Landscaping Supplies offer half round stakes, and round and half round stakes and strainers. Supplied either incised or tanalised depending on the option you choose, for long life our stake and rails are made from FSC certified timber options including our unique D shape rail that makes an excellent hand rail as well as a fence rail.
Installation
Fence rails are normally nailed to intermediate stakes at 1.8m centres and for best results joints should be staggered to ensure that the fence’s weight is distributed evenly. Another popular method is to have the stakes set at 3.6m centres, with a stake in the centre of the bay usually made from the same material as the rail, pointed and driven into the ground with the rails nailed to it to help stop the rails from bowing. Half round rails are normally fixed with nails and if you wish to use the fence to restrict the movement of animals it is a good idea to nail the rail from behind so the rail is pushed back into the nail if an animal leans against it.
Tips
Adding galvanised wire stock fencing to your post and rail fencing makes an ideal pet or small animal enclosure as well as providing support and protection in gardens for new shrubs and hedges.
